THE LOCATION
Cromwell is nestled in the valley of the Upper Clutha; the heart of Central Otago. A ‘timeless land’, this area was first discovered by the Maori hunters and traders, opened to European settlement by sheep farmers, then exploited and transformed by gold seekers and later by dam builders.
Now home to merino and deer farmers, to orchards and vineyards, to artists and artisans and to all those tempted by the dramatic landscape, history and superb climate. They have been drawn to the bare brown hills; the tussock, briar and purple thyme growing wild amidst tors of schist in broad basins and fertile valleys. It is a land of wide-open spaces, fresh air, and opportunity.
Covering an area of over 10,000km2 Central Otago houses fewer than 16,000 permanent residents. With so much to offer it is fast becoming one of New Zealand’s leading tourist destinations and a retreat for those seeking tranquillity from the bustle of city living.
Enjoyed by many, Lake Dunstan’s attractions include boating, water-skiing, windsurfing, canoeing, fishing, swimming, picnicking, jet boating, boat cruises and eco-tours of the abundant fish and bird life. Enjoy the solitude of the retreat that it is, or venture out to Cromwell (5 minutes drive), Wanaka (30 minutes), Alexandra (20 minutes) or Queenstown (40 Minutes) for extremes in entertainmentand adventure.
